Wyoming Unit 102 Elk Description
The lower elevation parts of the area are comprised of sagebrush flats, low broken hills and plains. These give way to mountain foothills, ridges and high forested mountains in the northwest. Elevations exceed 10,000 feet at the highest elevations and terrain can get very steep. There are also mountain mahogany, aspen and serviceberry hills and ridges. There is private irrigated land, primarily along the rivers and larger creeks.
Elk are generally only found with any regularity in the northwestern ½ of this hunt area. Elk tend to occupy the mountain shrub, aspen, forest and mountain meadows habitats. They will also be found in sagebrush meadows and hillsides in the mountains. There are ample places to hunt elk on BLM and USFS lands that require hiking or horses to access. Most roads in this hunt area become difficult when snowy, wet and muddy.
