Colorado Unit 139 Description

Unit 139 Located in Baca County bounded on the North by Prowers CRs D & F; on the East by the Kansas state line; on the South by Baca CR M; on the West by U.S. 287.

GMU 139 Elevation: 3,675 to 4,462 feet. Terrain: Flat to gently rolling hills. Vegetation: Shortgrass prairie with limited sand sage, cottonwood and farmland areas. Weather: Mild & dry. First snow by mid-October to mid-November. Severe weather possible by December. Land Status: Approx. 97 percent private, Comanche National Grasslands. Hunter Access: Fair to poor for deer and pronghorn. Deer: Good unit for whitetail deer found along cottonwood riparian areas and throughout irrigated farmland areas. Fair for mule deer found in dryland farmed areas and sand sage habitats. Public land deer opportunities include: Comanche National Grasslands, Two Buttes SWA, and Burchfield SWA. Pronghorn: Pronghorn are found in very low densities throughout the entire unit. Small game: Scaled quail and cottontail rabbits found throughout the unit; Pheasants and bobwhites found in agricultural areas throughout GMU. Public access available in Comanche National Grassland. Hunting for pheasants fair to excellent based upon amount and timing of precipitation. Hunting for bobwhites poor to good.
